A Refreshing Reflection to Quench Your MAGNET Thirst

By Molly Lahr

If you are like me, you cannot believe that over half the year has flown by! The first half of 2011 for MAGNET has been super successful and I would like to take a little time to review what has happened:

We kicked off the year with our Annual Speed Networking event hosted by the Sheraton Madison. With over 125 participants and a format change, the event was interactive and very informational. Our host, Ellen Bartkowiak from the UW Evening and Executive MBA Program, delivered the tips on what to do and what not to do when networking in large groups. All in all, members and guests had a great time trying out what to do! The event project leads, Laura Ritchie and Patrick Fosdick, led a great group of members in through the planning process. Thank you!

With the new year, we launched new programs, one of which is our Masterminds Program presented by Axley Brynelson LLP. The Masterminds Program is aimed at connecting entrepreneurs to each other for a peer to peer learning experience and then providing a tool kit type session with local professionals in a variety of areas. The Masterminds branding session brought together some of the most creative minds in Madison from Planet Propaganda, Cricket Design Works, and Hiebing. The project team planning this event is full of talented entrepreneurs, and is led by Melissa Turczyn.

In March, we hosted our first MAGNET Town Hall, and invited Former Mayor Dave and now Mayor Paul Soglin to participate in a lively debate at the Overture Center. We filled the room with more than 120 community members and listened to the candidates comments to the questions that MAGNET’s Public Policy team crafted. Our moderator, David Douglas, of WISC-TV, delivered our young professional-focused questions perfectly, resulting in great follow-up questions from the audience.

Community service is a very important part of being a member of the MAGNET community. Partnerships with the United Way

of Dane County and the Rosenberry Society, allowed for a unique opportunity to help a family gain a home in April. A great group from both organizations came together to clean, paint, repair, and furnish a new apartment for a family in need. It was an amazing experience and one that we hope to be able to offer again soon.

We finished the first half of the year with a fantastic showing at the 5th Annual MAGNET Golf Outing at The Oaks Golf Course. We had 112 golfers, 9 hole sponsors, 2 golf etiquette videos, and plenty of great volunteers who helped make this event a successful fundraiser for the organization. There are great pictures from the event on MAGNET’s Facebook fan page. We are already looking forward to the 6th Annual Golf Outing!

We also hosted the MAGNEtiquette Dinner presented by Edgewood College at Lombardino’s, had some amazing and well attended MAGNET Happy Hours, and a fantastic

Lunch Series presented by St. Mary’s Hospital.

There is never a shortage of great events and opportunities for MAGNET Members to get out and get connected. Stay posted to the events page for upcoming events throughout 2011!
