Wow, 2014 – my first year as President of Madison Magnet – really flew by! We’ve had an amazing year as an organization and I want to personally thank all of our members and friends for their commitment to growing with us! Magnet celebrated its 10th anniversary this year and I’d say we did so with a bang. We started off the year with a happy hour at Crystal Corner Bar on Willy Street; an oldie, but a goodie. Throughout the year we hosted young professional social hours at hot spots around Madison including The Ivory Room, One Barrel Brewing Company, The Wise at HotelRed, and the newly opened Star Bar on East Washington Ave. We hosted the 8th Annual Magnet Golf Outing at The Bridges – a memorable day for all. And we helped the Madison Mallards celebrate the end of their season with a social in the Duck Blind.
We deepened our connection to community organizations by volunteering for several local nonprofits including: Ronald McDonald House Charities of Madison, Second Harvest FoodBank, Badger Honor Flight, Special Olympics Wisconsin, and Ironman Wisconsin. I’m extremely passionate about getting involved in the community in which we choose to live, work and play, so I was happy to see so many YPs come out and volunteer throughout the year. Many of these events were coordinated along with the United Way Rosenberry Society and Magnet is happy to continue this partnership in the coming year.
A major accomplishment to note in 2014 was the rebirth of our Professional Development programming. We were happy to give members an inside look at one of the largest companies in Dane County by arranging a tour of the campus at Epic Systems. We also invited Grid Productive to our supercharged October happy hour. Owner Vicky Cassidy explained the 12 steps of productivity and offered tips and tricks for keeping young professionals on track with their careers and personal lives.
Trust me, we’re just getting started in this realm – more workshops are in store for next year.
Speaking of next year, let me offer you a sneak peek of Magnet’s offerings in the coming months – when we plan to bring you MORE in 2015!
- Connect with another group of YPs at a Community Connection with Habitat for Young Professionals (HYP) followed by a joint a build-day
- LinkedIn tips from an expert (you’ve never heard these ones before)
- An ENTIRE week dedicated to emerging leaders during YP Week-Wisconsin in April
- Social hours at the newest restaurants and bars in Madison with exclusive specials
- Member-only events you won’t want to miss
Because we plan to bring you MORE in 2015, Magnet will also be implementing a new membership rate on January 1, 2015 at $120/year. As a 100% volunteer organization, we’ll be using the new funds to offer increasing value and programming at several different membership levels. Take this opportunity to join or renew through December 31, 2014 at the current membership rate of $50/year. Please visit our JOIN page on the website for more information.
As the end of 2014 quickly approaches, Magnet closed out the year with our Annual Holiday Party. On December 4th, we hosted a “Masqued in Mystery” masquerade at The Bayou. Thank you to all our members and friends that celebrated with us! It was a great event.
Thank you again to our members for supporting Magnet by attending events, submitting your ideas, and being part of our community. You are always our first priority, and we hope you’ve enjoyed 2014 with Magnet and are as excited as I am for what’s in store for 2015!
All the best,
Corinn Ploessl Madison Magnet Board President
