Melissa has been a member of Magnet for three years now, and she serves on our Board of Directors plus two Magnet committees, Social and Membership.

We asked Melissa a few questions to get to know her a little bit better, but these responses are only scratching the surface. Be sure to look for Melissa at the next Magnet event you attend to get to know her a little bit better!

Why did you become a Magnet member?

I had just moved to Madison and wanted to see the city in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

Why have you continued to be a member?

Even after living here for three years, there's still so much more of Madison to discover! And being a part of two committees and on the board has greatly helped build up my leadership and organizational skills.

Tell us something that might surprise us about you:

I lived in Hong Kong for the majority of 2013 and think everyone should consider the experience of spending time overseas and immersing oneself in other cultures.

What has been your proudest professional accomplishment?

I can think of a few great professional accomplishments, but my FAVORITE was right before graduation after working with an on-campus catering company for three years in college and the president of the university asked for me by name to help oversee the catering of a special dinner at his house with a visiting delegation of university heads from all over China. He'd taken note of my work over the years and even handwrote me a thank you letter afterwards. I also got to serve dinner to former US President Jimmy Carter at an event two months after that!

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

To learn embrace your quirks and strengths in life and use them to your advantage.
