Gain Professional Experience with Magnet

We'd love to talk to you about joining one of our committees - Marketing, Social, Professional Development, Membership, and Community Involvement. It's your chance to get involved and gain experience!

What is Magnet?

Madison Magnet is a membership-based young professionals networking group in Madison, WI, and we focus on three main pillars: Community Involvement, Professional Development, and Social and Networking. There are committees for each of these pillars that work to create events and membership value to connect, collaborate, and develop the talent in Madison.

What are the committees?

The Social Committee manages social and cultural events for Magnet, including our monthly networking happy hours, annual holiday party and more. The committee is constantly looking for opportunities to bring members and non-members together in new and fun ways. Examples of other events we have organized include a Madison Eats food tour, group workout classes and the annual Magnet golf outing.  Interested in fine tuning your event management skills or just want to help foster our growing sense of community? The Professional Development Committee is tasked with creating interactive and informative opportunities that are designed to educate and enhance the career goals and skills of Magnet members. Whatever your field or professional interests, you are sure to find events that are appealing and accelerate your professional success. Past events include: No Fear Networking; Productivity Workshop; and Magnetic: Exploring Entrepreneurism. We’d love to hear from you on programming or event ideas so we can continue to provide opportunities that our members want! Please contact Erin West if you are interested. 

The Community Involvement Committee coordinates volunteering and community outreach opportunities for Magnet members and friends. With the busy lives of young professionals, the activities facilitated by this committee are an easy way for get and stay more involved with the wider Madison community, which is near and dear to all of us. In addition to participating in community events, we would encourage you to get involved with the committee which meets monthly, to help plan and coordinate an event for an organization which is important to you. The Marketing Committee is a group of young professionals that work together to create organization awareness, promote Magnet’s mission and values, and grow the membership base through value-based marketing messages. Each team member has a specific and accountable role such as email manager, social media manager, design lead, content manager, and more. We meet once a month for an hour to brainstorm, strategize, and execute on our campaigns. Please contact Melissa Johnson if you are interested. 

The Membership Committee focuses on all aspects of membership in effort to provide the most value for joining Magnet. We plan and host events to both educate prospective members, and welcome new members to Magnet. We collaborate with the Social Committee to plan exclusive, members-only events to further integrate our membership. Additionally, we work with community partners to secure member benefits. Our aim is to ensure all those who join Magnet are engaged and excited about being a part of our organization. Quarterly Catch-Up

By: Corinn Ploessl Do you have some serious FOMO* when you can’t make it to a Magnet event? Here’s what you missed out on these last few months.

Social

Our social game was strong this past quarter. We mixed and mingled with members & friends at our monthly happy hours. We sampled different wines at Fracesca’s Al Lago, toured and enjoyed music in Capital Brewery's beer garden, and finally, took in views of Lake Mendota and a gorgeous sunset at The Boathouse at the Edgewater.

A few members and friends played hooky the Friday before Memorial Day weekend with a Madison Eats Food Tour. Otehlia Cassidy led us on a lunch tour that included 3 stops around Capital Square.

In June, we held our 9th Annual Golf Outing at Pleasant View Golf Course in Middleton. Over 50 golfers hit the links – 18 holes of golf, putting with hockey sticks, stopping for selfies and cooling down with refreshing beer from Wisconsin Brewing Company. After play, golfers and friends enjoyed the 19th Hole Social at the Clubhouse.

Community Involvement

We channeled T. Swift in May with our “We Never Go Out of Style” event at the new St. Vincent de Paul store on Odana Road. CEO Ralph Middlecamp joined us for a cookout and discussed what he’s learned during his time leading a large, Madison NPO. We also had an all-out Style War – mad-rushing the store to pick out items that would create professional looks for YPs.

Who cut the cheese? We did! At Second Harvest Foodbank, our group of volunteers sort, cut, and packaged LOTS of cheese to prepare a shipment for delivery to local pantries.

Professional Development

We took the fear out of networking at our May Skill Building + Speed Networking session held at the Madison Club. We heard from experienced entrepreneur, Scott Kohl as he shared networking tactics and strategies for young professionals. Then we put these new strategies to the test during speed networking. Discussion ensued and lots of businesses cards were traded.

At our two book reviews, we learned about the advantages of being happy and how to gamestorm. Thank you to members, Scott Jaworski (The Happiness Advantage), and Jessica Parker & Erin West (Gamestorming) for leading these sessions!

Help us Avoid the Mid-Year Slump!

By: Corinn Ploessl We’re halfway through 2015 (That flew by, right!?) and Magnet’s Board of Directors and committees are hard at work planning what’s coming next. The first 6 months of this year brought us many successful events: YPWeek Wisconsin, our first book review (and a second, and now a series!,) a Community Connection with Habitat Young Professionals of Madison, a Madison Eats Food Tour and our 9th annual golf outing. We want to keep the momentum going and avoid any break in the awesomeness!

Despite the amazing programs that have come and gone, I know there are still many of you we haven’t connected with yet! We want to see your new faces amongst the familiar ones. Therefore, we want to take a moment to ask you all: Is there something you want to see Magnet host, a speaker you’re dying to hear from, a skill you’d like to learn more about, or a new venue you’re dying to get to? We want to hear from you! We always appreciate it when our members get involved and make suggestions. We want you to own your membership – you get out of Magnet what you put into it.

The Benefits of Being a "Connector"

I work as an associate attorney at a local law firm in Madison. Recently, the firm put on a seminar for the associates in which three partners spoke on how they have each grown their professional networks and how that networking has benefitted them. One of the presenters spoke about the benefits of being a "giver." "Givers," he explained, are people that often put their clients, potential clients and co-workers needs before their own. Although "givers" might be generally less effective in business success than "takers" in the short run, they often out distance takers in the long run. He shared that by giving his time, energy, advice, etc. to others, as opposed to taking, he built deeper and broader connections. Additionally, he found that people he "gave" to were more likely to refer their connections to him down the road. In addition to broadening your network, I have always found giving to be personally rewarding.

This seminar also reminded me of a chapter from Malcolm Gladwell's book The Tipping Point. In that book, Gladwell talks about how people are either "Connectors," "Mavens" or "Salesmen." When I read the book, I thought being a Connector could be a great benefit to one's professional development. Gladwell wrote a blog entry about how you can tell if you are a connector, which you can find here: http://gladwell.com/are-you-a-connector/  I found the blog article interesting, and thought you might too.

One of the (many) great things about Magnet, is that it allows people to be "Givers" and become "Connectors." We hope to see you at a Magnet event soon, giving and connecting.

Networking and Golf

I've been golfing most of my life. I grew up pretty close to the public golf course. That's not to say I'm an excellent golfer, I still have an atrocious slice and my putting and chipping could use some work as well. Still - I enjoy the game of go

lf. I really love the concept of a single-player games like golf. Golf has been used in movies and television shows as a metaphor for life and an activity to bring about positive introspective thought. I can relate to that, as I've often found myself at peace on the golf course despite whatever mess may await me elsewhere.

So the idea of building a networking event around the game might seem, well, odd. After all most people don't immediately think of networking when they think of golf. On the surface it appears to be about one person, challenging themselves by trying to ignore the distractions of their current environment to focus on the task of putting a little white ball in a cup several hundred yards away. In other words, the game seems to be about hyper-focusing on a single task despite your current company - not because of it. How could that have anything to do with networking?

Since metaphors remain lingering, I'll cut to the chase by simply saying that golf is not just about the act of golfing. How the game naturally pairs with networking is derived from the non-golf part of golf. So when we look at these other aspects, it becomes easy to see how perfectly paired with networking the game can be.

For example, teeing off is usually done as a group. Each member of your team is rooting for you, perhaps offering advice or making sure you're aware of the hazards that lay before you. Armed with the best of intentions, your teammates remain absolutely silent as you address the ball. Knowing that you need to concentrate on the task at hand. Immediately after the ball is struck they help track its path, knowing you're doing your best to keep your head down until the absolute last minute.

Before you even begin to immerse yourself in the game, you've benefitted from the shared experiences of everyone around you. Your teammates become your networked resource throughout the game, invaluable as you ponder ways to avoid sand traps, select the proper club, and plot the possible paths toward the hole. You do more than exchange business cards and share a drink when you golf, you learn about people, humility, competition, success in one of the only games played where you hope to have the lowest score than anybody else.

The act of golf may be played in solitary, but the game is anything but. Thinking of Joining Magnet?

I am thinking of joining MAGNET…I just joined MAGNET…I want to get involved…What next? I love answering these questions, because regardless of which one is being asked, I know this person is ready to be a part of the excellent network that exists within the organization. But, really, how do you get started?

I always tell people the best way to get a feel for the group is to come out

to an event. With an average of 4 events a month, there is no shortage of getting a MAGNET date on your calendar. When you come, make sure you have an open mind and you are ready to make connections. Find ways to connect with others both with their professional and also personal lives. You may just find your 4th bowler for your league team.
